Introduction
Namibia is located in southwest Africa and is a large
and mainly arid country made up largely of the vast
shifting sand dunes of the Namib Desert. In the interior,
the escarpment of a north–south plateau slopes
away to the east and north into the vast interior sand
basin of the Kalahari. The Fish River Canyon , located
in the south of the country is the world’s second
largest canyon and can be hiked over a distance of 85km’s.
In the far northwest, the Kaokoland mountains run along
the coast, while further inland lies the Etosha Pan,
which is a dried-out saline lake surrounded by grasslands
and bush which support a large and varied wildlife.
There is an abundance of 4x4 trails across the country
and horse trails are also very popular. In the far north,
the Kunene river offers commercial muti-day rafting
trips.
Best time of the year to go
Because the vast majority of the country is arid and
semi arid desert, temperatures can therefore be extreme
and get to over 40 degrees celcius during the summer
months. Almost all treks are only open April to September,
with the peak season being June to August.
What to wear
Cool cotton clothing for the daytime, wide brimmed
hats are essential. Mid winter evenings can drop to
5 degrees celcius so warmer fleeces are advisable.
Getting around
Flying is the quickest and often the most economical
way to travel around the country. Air Namibia links
all of the major towns in the territory. Planes can
also be chartered to private game lodges.
Roads are generally well maintained, but distances between
cities are vast. Make sure you have sufficient fuel
for the distance you plan to cover. An air-conditioned
vehicle is strongly advised.
Traveller safety
Namibia is a relatively safe country in which to travel.
Travellers should not leave their luggage unattended.
Currency and foreign exhange facilities
The local currency is the Namibian Dollar although
South African Rands are also widely accepted. Currency
exchange is available in banks and at bureaux de change.
A better rate of exchange can be obtained on travellers
cheques than on cash. Most major credit cards are accepted.
Health Information
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required
from travellers arriving from infected areas. Malaria
risk exists in the northern regions and in Otjozondjupa
and Omaheke from November to May/June and along the
Kavango and Kunene rivers throughout the year. The recommended
prophylaxis is chloroquine plus proguanil. Mains water
is normally chlorinated, and whilst safe may cause mild
abdominal upsets. Bottled water is available and is
advised. Local meat, poultry, seafood, fruit and vegetables
are generally considered safe to eat. Anti-bite serums
for snakes and scorpions are advised. Health insurance
is essential. |
