Introduction
Made famous by being home to the spectacular Ruwenzori
Mountains, Uganda is country of immense beauty. Recovering
from recent civil war, the country is making every effort
to promote eco-tourism and develop the country’s
many natural assets. Mt Elgon is the country’s
second highest peak and surrounded by thick indigenous
forests, is home to many species of unique flora and
fauna.
Best time of the year to go
The best times to visit Uganda are in the dry season
which are June to September and December to February.
Owing to the high altitude the temperatures are somewhat
temperate considering the country’s position in
relation to the equator. Mt Elgon often has an ice-cap
and the mountain regions are generally cooler than other
parts of the country.
What to wear
Lightweight cotton clothing for daytime travelling.
Ensure you have adequate rainwear and warm polar clothing
if you are planning on climbing Mt Elgon or the other
taller peaks.
Getting around
The international airport is at Entebbe. Most safari
companies provide transport to and from the airport
as public transport is unreliable.
Traveller safety
There is still a strong military presence in the country,
and the people bear the scars of a brutal civil war.
It is however relatively safe to travel within the country
and the best option is to pre-book all your arrangements
prior to arrival so that you have a guide to escort
you wherever you go.
Currency and foreign exchange facilities
The local currency is the Ugandan Shilling. Currency
can be exchanged at most major banks and hotels. Credit
cards are widely accepted. It’s advised to have
travellers cheques in US Dollars to get the best exchange
rates.
Health Information
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required
from travellers, and a typhoid vaccination certificate
is recommended. Malaria is a risk throughout the country
at all times of the year. It’s essential to take
prophylactics and use insect repellent. Drink only bottled
water. Vegetables should be cooked and fruit peeled.
