Introduction
Zimbabwe’s tourism industry has been marred by
recent civil unrest, but this doesn’t detract
from the beauty of the country and the many adventure
activities it has to offer. At this stage the only trek
being offered in Zimbabwe is the thrilling whitewater
rafting from Victoria Falls down the Bogota Gorge. Experience
the adrenalin of riding a series of grade V rapids and
enjoy camping under the stars on the river bank.
Best time of the year to go
The best times to visit are April to May and August
to September which are the dry seasons. Zimbabwe has
a temperate climate all year with hot summer temperatures.
Winter night time temperates can drop substantially
in the highland and mountainous regions.
What to wear
Lightweight cottons are advised for daytime, with warmer
wear for the evenings. Rainwear is needed if travelling
during the rainy season.
Getting around
Harare and Victoria Falls have international airports
with regular flight schedules. Public transport is unreliable
and fuel shortages have made getting around expensive
and difficult.
Traveller safety
Travellers should exercise caution and check up on
the latest developments as there has been unrest over
the past few years. Currently the country is somewhat
stable, and travelling to the Victoria Falls area should
present no safety issues.
Currency
The local currency is the Zimbabwean Dollar. The currency
has devalued so much recently that most hotels and tour
operators only accept payment in US Dollars. Currency
can be exchanged at most major banks. Credit cards are
accepted in most major cities and larger accommodation
establishments.
Health Information
A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required
from travellers, and a cholera vaccination certificate
is recommended. Malaria is a risk throughout the country
and is highest in coastal areas. It’s essential
to take prophylactics and use insect repellent. Drink
only bottled water. Vegetables should be cooked and
fruit peeled. |
