Frequently asked questions

Can’t find answers to your question?
Send us your question and we’ll get back to you shortly with the relevant answers.

How safe is it to travel in Africa?
Most of the Southern African countries that our treks operate in (with the exception of Zimbabwe) have enjoyed peaceful times with little civil unrest over the past few years. However with large scale poverty there are always the problems of theft should belongings be left unattended or unlocked. You should therefore take care to keep items of value such as passports and cash on you at all times and try avoid displaying expensive goods such as cameras in public, rather have them packed away in your bags unless you’re using them. In general it’s advised not to walk around at night in major cities and seek advice at the local hotels when venturing out on your own explorations. All our treks operate with qualified local guides who do their best to ensure your safety and peace of mind whilst travelling with us in Africa.

What inoculations are needed?
This information is given as a general guideline only. For the most up to date information please check with your local travel clinic. For most countries there are no compulsory inoculations, with the exception of Tanzania and Kenya that require a yellow fever certificate. Some travel clinics advise a Cholera and Hepatitis inoculation but this is dependent on which region you’re travelling to. Malaria occurs through most of Southern Africa, and you should take the necessary precautions.

What happens in the event of a medical emergency?
Most tours include medi-evac insurance which allows you to be evacuated to South Africa for medical treatment. In addition it is compulsory for all over clients to have travel insurance which covers all medical and hospitalisation costs therafter. If you are unsure whether your travel insurance is adequate please do not hesitate to ask for information on additional insurance.

What’s the best currency to travel with?
US Dollars are widely accepted throughout Southern Africa, although bargaining is always best done in the local currency. Travellers cheques are difficult to cash outside of major cities and outside of South Africa credit cards are not very widely accepted. It’s advised to take smaller denominations in cash when travelling to more rural areas as change isn’t readily given.

How far in advance should I book?
To ensure availability it’s advised to book three to six months in advance. A small deposit is all that’s required to secure your reservation and the balance is only due six weeks prior to departure.

What if I’m travelling alone?
We do specialise in tailor-making packages and can put together an exclusive itinerary for you. If however you’d prefer to join a group this can generally be arranged on most tours depending on the departure schedule.

Can I combine trips or make up my own itinerary?
Yes of course! We specialise in tailor making packages to meet our clients specific needs. If you have a special interest or would like to visit a site that’s not part of our standard itineraries, please let us know and we will dour best to accommodate you.

Can we get a group discount?
Most tours advertised on based on a minimum of 4 people. Should you have a group a group of 6-10 people you may qualify for a savings of up to 20% per person. Better still, join one of our scheduled group departures and qualify for the discount even if you’re travelling alone.

Can I be sure that the guides are suitably qualified?
All our guides hold industry and national accreditation certificates, and have been operating in the field for a minimum of 5 years. In addition, most guides are locally based which means they are very familiar with the habitat, wildlife and weather in the region and are fully capable in taking good care of guests in any given situation.
