Description
The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park straddles the northern border of South Africa with Botswana. The absence of man-made barriers has provided a conservation area large enough to maintain examples of two ecological processes that were once widespread in the savannas and grasslands of Africa. The large scale migratory movements of wild ungulates and predation by large mammalian carnivores. In addition to this, the Kalahari has a particular aesthetic appeal. The harsh, semi-arid environment has placed adaptive demands on both fauna and flora that are of considerable scientific interest. The contrasting earth tones have a unique beauty that create wonderful photo opportunities.

Sample ItineraryDay 1
Depart from Johannesburg and drive to the frontier town
of Vryburg, which is situated on the edge of the largest
sand basin in the world – the Kalahari. Camp at
the Kameelboom Lodge campsite just outside the town.
Day 2
Departing after breakfast, travel with alternative gravel
roads to Mc Carthy’s Rest border post, from where
you continue on to Tsabong. There you refuel before
tackling the sand tracks through the Mabuasehube wilderness,
until we reach our campsite at Mabuasehube Pan. Your
first night under the sparkling star studded Kalahari
sky, miles away from civilization and unbound by any
fences is a memorable experience.
Day 3
Keeping an open agenda, you spend the day game viewing.
If fortunate you may be able to visit the site of a
kill, watch the playful behaviour of the Spotted Hyena
cubs, or encounter a large herd of Springbok.
Day 4
Depart from Mabuasehube after breakfast and drive deeper
into the wilderness. The route takes you into the Kgalagadi
Transfrontier Park, where we will camp overnight at
the Kaa entrance gate.
Day 5
Today’s trail takes you on rough dirt tracks into
the heart of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The route
winds through this wilderness, gameviewing along the
way. The campsite tonight will be at Polentswa Pan,
which is well known for its Lion activity.
Day 6
Wake up in the wilderness, where the red dunes and scrub
fade into infinity and herds of gemsbok, springbok,
eland and blue wildebeest follow the seasons. Here imposing
camel thorn trees provide shade for huge black-maned
lions and vantage points for leopard and raptors. Game
drive to “Unions End” and “Lang Rambuka”.
Day 7
Depart from Polentswa Pan, and drive south in the Nossob
riverbed, exiting the Park at Twee Rivieren, before
proceeding to the comfortable Molopo Lodge. Overnight
stay is at the Lodge where you can enjoy some home comforts
after almost a week in the wilderness.
Day 8
Here there is an option to continue on to Namibia or
return to Johannesburg. If returning to Johannesburg
it’s a long drive and there is the option to overnight
near Kuruman in order to break the journey.
